November 7th 2008 - opening of major new facilities by Irma Dolphin

On Friday 7
November 2008, Julie Moulsdale, Headteacher at Hyde Heath Infant School,
welcomed families and friends of the School to an official ceremony to celebrate
the completion of a building project which began in April 2008. A long-standing
resident of Hyde Heath village, Mrs Irma Dolphin, who was a pupil at the School
from 1915 to 1926, was delighted be able to perform the formal opening ceremony
by unveiling a plaque over the new staff room.
The School
has been completely refurbished, to include an additional third classroom and a
brand new staff room. The premises have been newly carpeted and decorated
throughout, with additional storage facilities inside and out, and new staff
toilets. A magnificent new entrance has been created at the front of the
school, using named bricks sponsored by families and friends. This is a very
fitting acknowledgement of the strength of local support enjoyed by the school.
Much of the
work was completed during the Summer term whilst the school was in full
operation. Seeing the building works happening around them certainly added to
the children’s broad and balanced curriculum.
This was an
enormous project for a small village school, and it would not have happened
without generous support from so many people, including parents (especially the
School Parents’ Association), friends, Hyde Heath Village Shop and Little
Missenden and St Andrew’s Churches. However, the main benefactors of the
project were Bill & Vi Williamson. Bill lived all his life in Hyde Heath
village and attended the school in the early 1900’s. Bill and Vi left generous
bequests to various Hyde Heath village organisations, including the School, and
the School Governors have now been able to make full use of the bequest for the
benefit of the children of Hyde Heath - present and future.
The current
pupils entertained their visitors with songs and a poem specially written for
the occasion, and enjoyed a Celebration Cake made by Mrs Margaret Dunn who is a
friend and former Governor of the School.
Visitors were
able to view the new facilities after the opening ceremony - a nostalgic time
for many former pupils, parents and staff.
Mrs Moulsdale
emphasised the importance of the School as a part of Hyde Heath’s thriving
community, and the significance of this project in securing the future of the
School. The School is almost full at present, and looks forward to continuing
to welcome new pupils from the village and the surrounding area each year.
